  1. Color matching tools
  • Color matching is the crucial part for mass production. Leather being natural material, and Semi finished leather like Wet blue and EI vary in color and tannage lot to lot from same supplier and worst when purchased from multiple suppliers, puts the color matcher in trouble,as there will be variations within one lot of production. What people do to minimize such variations. They try to homogenize the semi-finished leather, for this they may purchase from one supplier, one region and so. Also there are some methods to minimize the variations technically. Variations shall be minimized by sandwiching the coloring process (be it dyeing or finishing).
  • All these are problems, what is the solution. Color matching people paid for this and they are doing this successfully for quite a long. But if there could be a tool for matching, they could minimize their time for matching, arrive at better matched lot with very less variations (as their energy would be spent on final matching). How a color matcher matches shades, they have a reference of the same shade matched previously from similar semi finished leather, simple to say they have manually maintained data base.
  • So a color matching tool could begin with the database these people are managing with, a data base managed in a computer could facilitate storage and retrieval with desired filters of search. But when we get into the details of unique features that could affect the color would be numerous, these parameters that affects color on a substrate would be
  1. Species
  2. Origin
  3. Tannage
  4. Ageing (to little extent)
  5. Retannage
  6. Water (this shall be assumed to be same for one tannery)
  • Before going to create a database, one must consider reducing the number of dependencies, like rive at better matched lot with very less variations (as their energy would be spent on final matching). The dependency on Water could be minimized if a standard source of water after RO treatment. The dependency of age of Semi finished leather could be minimized with meticulous planning of required RM for production and consuming the RM soon after purchase. A standard tannage and retannage per article or set of articles would also help.
  • How color matching can be done by a computer tool?

Color is component of primary colors and their color strength,If the leather produced in tannery are screened for content of these primary colors and strength at which they are available, a database of different colors with all these varying factors could be created.
